You have to ask where are all the talented musicians and writers gone because they are still in existence.

I googled a list of all the rock & pop of the 80s but it's too long to list. Add 70s through 90s if you want.

I was going to estimate from that list how many musicians there were and logic would suggest we should have the same amount today if not more.

However many it happens to be, what are they all doing today instead of writing good music? What a loss of creativity and invention and how many millions of songs would that be? This is what has been lost to loopers and drum machines, it's incalculable damages.

Compare these never dying classics to one rap tune that will remain with us in our hearts till death. You can't because there isn't one.

Does this mean that the digital age has killed real musical creative and inventive talent forever? For a while it accentuated the talent (DX7) but now seems to have washed it away completely.
I think part of the problem is the WAY in which Music is marketed these days.

With the rise of the internet, came the illusion that Music was . . .er . . . Free (just download everything - 'cos we can . . . )

In the past that we remember - it was chiefly about record sales . . . . . .OK, those are still valid, but the big money is

now in Live shows.

When I performed with Rick at the RFH for his 70th Birthday (Sat and Sun) There was guy who had flown to the UK from Argentina

with his wife for a "special treat" for their anniversary. They both had VIP (meet and greet) Tickets for BOTH nights!

around £300 each IIRC . . . . So this is where the serious money is happening . . . .

Back in the 70s I saw Yes/Genesis/Robin Trower/Queen for around £3.50 (IIRC) Hey! even the Cream Farewell Concert in 68/9?

. . . . admittedly - I was up in the Gods for THAT price - but I WAS there . . . .

These days - you can do AMAZING things in a bedroom Studio that we could only dream of, back then . . . .

So - I think these guys ARE out there alright - just doing it differently . . . HOWEVER - TALENT still makes a difference

If I could add my personal opinion on this...
I think there is actually MORE talent out there now and it's more accessible than ever before. It's there to be found and enjoyed - on the Internet. Or more precisely on YouTube. I am often awed by the talent I've seen and heard demonstrated by so many performers of all ages and all walks of life, each having their own often obscure YouTube channel. And that is the real issue - namely that you have to turn to such obscure YouTube channels to find such talent. Because the music most heavily broadcast and promoted is probably more mediocre than ever. So with this qualification, I agree with what others have posted here.
